Dear LMC Advice Column,

Usually, I'm so excited about the holidays but this year is going to be different. It's not just about not seeing people because of Covid (which it also is) it's because of my little sister. She's 3 now, almost 4. Before she was a baby/toddler so people just got her useful stuff and got me the fun stuff. Now that she's old enough to say what she wants she has this whole list my relatives are going to get her. A bunch of barbie dolls and stuffed animals. I'm not a little kid so I'm fine with not getting a lot of presents, but I don't like how now she is the center of attention. When it was just for me I got all the attention. My parents are always like, "your sister needs these things more than you do." Because of her now I'm just going to get a bunch of out of fashion clothes from my relatives. I love Christmas because it's so cheerful and fun - but not this year.

      - Sister Taking Over

   Dear Sister taking over,

That sounds like it is an annoying thing for you to deal with. As a little sister myself, I'll admit we get a few perks, however, I don't think your parents know that this is bothering you, and it might help you to communicate to them how you're feeling. Also instead of doing a big list of things you want that they might get mad at you for, put together a list of a few things you really want so people know you're not being greedy and are more likely to get the few things you really want. Also always remember that only ask for things you really want and things you know someone would actually buy you. If you know that people are just going to get your clothes no matter what you say, ask for clothes from stores you like or ask for a gift card because you know what clothes you like! Remember your parents love you and want the best for you and your sister! Hope this helps!

Dear LMC Advice Column,

I can’t focus during class I always get distracted and [lose] track of what’s happening and it takes me till six to finish my work and whenever I take breaks, l [can] never get back to work.

  • Can’t focus and get work done

Dear Can’t focus and get work done,

Maybe you can set timers to let you know when you need to work, I understand things are distracting, so maybe you should set timers for yourself to make sure you're working. In addition, maybe you can set a fun thing to do after all your work as a reward for finishing, something you really want to do, and try to force yourself not to take big breaks till you're done with your work. Have one big break when you finish all your work. You also said that you get distracted, so maybe work in a room where you can concentrate and put away all distracting things. Such as pets, devices, toys, etc. Stamina is an important thing, and will really help you do well in school. Feel free to message us any time!

Dear LMC Advice Column,

Help. Me. I'm having trouble keeping up with assignments. Sometimes I stay up late in bed, working on them until two or one... but even then I get distracted. Not to help that around 12 pm, I always hit an existential crisis (haha, just that hour, I guess) I'm trying to juggle between social interactions and being able to work, and I hate to be the person to say this, but I'm going through a bit of stuff right now, and sometimes that makes it hard to handle both mental health and productivity. What do I do?

  • All-nighter

Dear All nighter,

I think you have to reach out because your teachers don’t want you pulling all-nighters. If you need an extension, ask for it instead of staying up all night. If you don't get any sleep you're not going to do well the next day. In addition, maybe try to find a different place to work, a place where you have fewer distractions. Like I said in the letter before, plan to do something that you really like after you finish all your work. About your social life, everyone needs to have that connection - so set aside a time each day where you just talk to your friends and relax. This is better than taking little breaks throughout the day. Overall I’m really sorry that you are dealing with this so I hope this helps! Reach out if you need it!

“Working on New Years Eve?!!” Walter yelled into the phone. “What kind of crazy person would do that?” Walter’s boss sounded annoyed. “Look, Walter, even though it is New Year’s Eve, we are still open 24/7. You’ve still got work. Maybe next year you can find a different job.” “I just-” But his boss had hung up. Walter slammed the phone down on the table. He hated his job. Seriously, working on New Year’s Eve? He sighed and started walking home from the cafe, where he hadn’t even finished drinking his coffee. Really, it's going to be 2030! A whole new decade! I can’t work!

But of course, he had to, or else he would lose his job, and he couldn’t do that.  He put on his uniform and walked to CVS where he worked. There was no one in the store, obviously, because everyone else was celebrating New Year’s. Soon as I finish this shift I am going to give my boss a piece of my mind, he thought. A 4 hour shift seemed like forever working at a store no one was in. It was mostly a long time of playing angry birds on his phone. That was until his first customer came in. He walked around for a bit and came to the register with a package of dull colored birthday balloons. “I’d like to buy these please,” he said to Walter. Walter didn’t care to think why some rando was buying birthday balloons at 10 o’clock at night. “That'll be $6.99,” he yawned. The customer replied, “All I have are 6 dollars and this coin.” He placed the money on the table. “It's a rare coin. Made in 1959. Not many of them. It will add up to about 1 dollar, that coin.” Walter looked at it. The coin really seemed old. It was all rusted and it had the normal markings of a dollar coin, except for the fact that it was a reddish color and it had a sort of border in light blue around the edges of it. It certainly seemed like it was worth a lot of money. “Yeah, sure whatever.” He took the money and put the coin in his pocket. He asked if the man wanted a bag for his birthday balloons. But the man had already left the store.

                                                        _______________

“Beep beep beep beep beep.” Walter’s alarm clock read 8:15. He slammed his hand down on it to stop the alarm, but instead ended up knocking it off the table, where it landed on the floor, still beeping. ”Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh”. He groaned, getting out of bed. He reached down and picked up the alarm clock. It was the weekend and he still had work. But as soon as he walked out of his house, he knew something was off.

The first thing he noticed were the cars. He had a Honda Civic but it was no longer parked in front of his building. All the cars he saw were bigger and oddly shaped, and they had more rounded tops. He had never seen anything like them before, except in movies. Then he noticed the people. All wearing suits, or dresses in bright colors. He was just wearing his CVS uniform.

He walked down the street, not even knowing where he was going anymore. He had never been so confused before. All the shiny, silver, tall modern buildings in his neighborhood had disappeared. Instead there were short, brick apartment houses. He walked over to a newspaper stand and looked at the papers. The newspaper man asked if he wanted one, and confused, Walter blurted out “What year is it? Where am I?” “See for yourself”. The newspaper man threw him a newspaper, and Walter fumbled and caught it. That was when he looked at the date. January 1, 1959.

And screamed.

It was December 18, 2406, After the fall of the Global empire, a canal straight through the ruins of an old island A decrepit canal formed, the main way into the shattered planet. The night was not to stay for much longer, and the first hints of sunrise could be seen, but it was still as cold as ever, there was a young adventurer who had come to examine the wreckage and quite possibly take a bit back. As he left the City canal he was put in a trance, though destroyed to a point of no return, he could still feel the beauty. Fog covering large skyscrapers and beautiful blinding lights as though it was a long 386 years ago. Caught in his dazzling trance, he did not notice the island ahead, and when he crashed on it, he went to assess the wreckage. Out of the low fog, a lantern appeared, followed by an old woman. He asks, “Who are you?”

She replies “The last Human.”

The adventurer says “How do I get off this island?”

The old lady replies “You will find a way.” She continues, “I am a humble old hag, not much longer for this world, but I have seen the Global empire's birth, lived through the prosperous rule of Emperor Hiiplat I and seen the fall of the empire in Emperor Altpatveaiine III’s Hand. I am the last Survivor, and eventually, I must die. Heed my warning. “What warning?” asked the adventurer. The old lady whispers “The Emperor with the golden fist.” She walks to a place ruined even before the blast and sits down on the stump of the tree, mutters some incomprehensible babble, and dies.

Airlines - Rushing to deliver Covid-19 vaccine

The global aviation (flying or operating of aircraft) industry, laid low by the pandemic, is gearing up (getting ready for) to play a critical role in delivering the billions of vaccine doses the world needs to fight Covid-19. Airlines are using passenger jets for cargo-only flights, as airports are bolstering (strengthening) security at depots handling the shots and adding or expanding cold-storage facilities to keep doses at their required (needed) temperature.

New York Nurse - One of the first to take Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine

A Nurse in New York was among the first to receive the Pfizer vaccine shot Monday morning. Quoted by the nurse, “it didn’t feel any different from taking any other vaccine.” However quoted by officials, “It's going to take months before the vaccine hits critical mass. So this is the light at the end of the tunnel, but it’s a long tunnel and we need people to continue to do the smart/right thing all through the holidays.” And there you have it, there is some light at the end of this tunnel but we're not there yet, so we need everyone to be safe during the Holidays and make good decisions. But at the same time have a great Holiday and a Happy New Year!

1. Close your eyes, breath, and rest.

2. As if you’re falling asleep, let go of all thoughts. Just feel your breath. I’ll wait for everyone to settle, sigh and melt, release any wiggles, movement, or tension.

3. When you're silent and still, I’ll know you are ready to listen. With every breath, you become more and more relaxed… Great.

4. Imagine that you see a mountain. Notice everything you can about this mountain: its shape and height, its colors and qualities. Notice how calm, strong, steady, wise it is.

5. Now Imagine that you are the mountain. Let yourself become strong, steady, solid, and still. Whatever happens, bad weather or good, friendly hikers or not, you, the mountain stay the same.

6. Your foundation is rooted deep into the earth and you are unshakeable. Trust in your foundation and the strength that comes from being able to be with whatever comes, knowing that it will pass.

7. Breath and be. Breathe and be.

8. Let everything come and go. You notice the world change, but you do not change with it. Thoughts and feelings come and go, but you, the mountain, remain… seeing, knowing that it will pass.

9. It's time to come back to the room.

10. Gently begin to wiggle your fingers and your toes. Take any final stretches that feel good to you on your back or your side.

11. When you are ready, come back to a comfortable seated position on your chair.
